Four Home Remedies for Getting Rid of Ants
Ants are these pesky little creatures that, it seems, are almost impossible to keep at bay. They sneak in and eat your food but mainly, they are just plain annoying. If you don’t want to spend money on expensive ant removal or if you don’t want to call the Orkin man, you may have what you need at home. Lemon Juice Whenever someone mentions anything about exterminating ants they never look in their cabinets for the simplest home remedies. Lemon juice diluted with sugar water will kill the ants or at least keep them at bay. If you take one part lemon juice (which can be found at any Walmart), one part sugar water and a spray bottle you have your own ant exterminator. You take the spray bottle and spray window sills, door frames or just where the pests are entering your home. Peppermint Essential Oil Not many people have Peppermint Oil/Extract; however, if you have it in your spice cabinet you can put this part with water and you have another home remedy for ants. Peppermint oil attracts the ants because it smells sweet, like a peppermint candy. Once they take their first sips the oil starts to kill them slowly. Because of their small organs and body they can not handle the viscosity of the oil. Not to mention it leaves your home smelling pleasant other than insecticide. Baking Soda & Powdered Sugar
Two substances that are alike in texture but have completely separate uses are: baking soda and powdered sugar. When mixing the two the sweetness of the powdered sugar attracts and the baking soda is the tool that kills. This home remedy is almost flawless. The baking soda reacts with the formic acid in the ant’s body and kills them. For anyone that has these two things laying around it is a very useful concoction. If you sprinkle it where the ants are entering your home, they will definitely stay at bay. Make sure you do not use regular granulated sugar. The granulated sugar is in a crystalline form and the ants will literally pick through the pile to eat what they want and discard of the rest. Together baking soda and powdered sugar make a great home remedy to kill ants. Equal & Apple Juice Apple juice is very acidic but somehow ants still can drink it without any effects. However, if Equal (yes, the sweetener) is sprinkled in the apple juice it becomes a neurotoxin for these little pests. They will happily drink their apple juice, venture off to a different land and die. Together apple juice and Equal make a poison for the ants. With this you don’t have to worry about cleaning up dead ants later; perfect home remedy for killing ants. All of these products can be found at your local grocery store. How would you feel if we commit ant homicide? You’d probably feel much better. Use the items listed above and those pests will leave your house, and hopefully, never come back. |
